Inky, chocolate-y petite sirah and cool, meaty syrah in the lead roles, with a pinch of elegant merlot and a spicy dash of barbera – making for one big, rich, generous, and silky smooth blend hailing from just north of Napa County on the high elevation volcanic soils of the Mayacamas Mountains up in Lake County. SHANNON RIDGE in da house! We thought this wine was a pretty rockin’ deal at $25, even at the $45 published price from Wine Enthusiast, but you know how we do!!! We just cajoled and purred and begged the price to something EXTRAORDINARY. Like…say…$12. Wowza!
TWELVE DOLLARS?! OK, ok, one thing. You gotta like juicy, ripe, and spicy wines. This ain’t for the elegant/light/dainty wine drinker, uh uh. While not a super HEAVY wine, it IS luscious, perfumed, the aforementioned JUICY, lush and ripe with blackberry fresh-baked pie, chai spices (oh yeah), baked strawberries, some crazy vanilla bean, black cherries, and a long, enticing, lush-CA-fruit finish. Soft and round and priced to throw a case in your cart and strap one on your back. Wow! What a score for us (and you of course!) – but PLEASE do move quickly...we bought a lot but $12 masterpiece deals don’t come around as often as we’d like….while it lasts…!
** Last week of the OLYMPICS! What’s your favorite part so far? I’m sticking with the Turkish hitman…ahem, sharpshooter. There’s so much chatter flitting about – I have no idea what is actually true – but the “origin story” I heard is bound to be a movie one day…wife cheated on him with the local butcher, left, took his dog, and his therapist recommended he take up shooting to channel his frustrations (seriously?) Six months later, he’s got a silver medal. I’d watch that – hell, I’d re-up my Netflix subscription for that! **
