Lucien Crochet Sancerre Rouge La Croix du Roy 2018
Sancerre Rouge from a Domaine Dujac-trained winemaker? That certainly grabbed our attention, and it should get yours! This is a stunning example of Loire Valley Pinot Noir. Lucien Crochet is definitely a family affair, with three generations of winegrowing (on both sides of the current generation vintners, Gilles Crochet).
This small domaine – of which only 9 hectares are planted to Pinot Noir – crafts an absolutely pristine Sancerre Rouge. The grapes grow on a mix of Oxfordian limestones speckled with marne, and all on a warmer south/southeast exposure. The result is layered and powerful – more in line with Red Burgundy. Opening notes of baker’s chocolate and raspberries, with hints of black pepper and cigar box, followed by notes of toasted pecans, smoked meats, and spicy red currants and pomegranates. Silky smooth and gorgeously integrated – this is sure to please, now and for years more. For less than $30 a bottle, this is what we call an IDEAL DEAL.
** All orders will be combined and shipped from our West Coast warehouse, so give it a little time, East Coasters! **
