Le Clos du Caillou Côtes-du-Rhône Cuvee Unique Vieilles Vignes 2021 (6-Pack)

“Bargain hunters should stockpile these superb Côtes du Rhônes.” - Robert Parker, Jr.

You heard the man! Go, go, GO! LE CLOS DU CAILLOU! This is one of Châteauneuf-du-Pape’s TOP estates – this history, the old vines, the incredible story…just a producer in Courthezon that has it all! UNDER $100 for SIX!!! That is…INSANE.

But, Last Bottle guy, it’s not even a real Châteauneuf-du-Pape wine! It’s just some random Côtes du Rhône that doesn’t even have a score! Ok…one…shut your pie hole. And two…it’s time for school. The year is 1936. Adolf Hitler had just stationed troops and remilitarized German lands near the Rhine River, along the eastern border of France – essentially shattering the Treaty of Versailles and putting Europe on the brink of war. Meanwhile, in the utterly stunning and quaint wine-producing region of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, government officials came knocking at the Le Clos du Caillou as part of a survey team to draw up the first official boundaries of CdP. The caretakers at Clos du Caillou mistake their intentions (can you really blame them?), and unceremoniously run them off the property at gunpoint. So…no survey, and now, an oddly shaped, and curiously located wound is carved from the northeastern corner of the CdP maps…a mere stone’s throw from the likes of Chateau Rayas, Pignan, Le Bedines, and La Jannasse – some of the unquestioned BEST sites in the entire appellation.

Same soils, same grapes, right down to those huge “galet roules” giant potato-looking stones CdP is revered for. So…obviously…there are Côtes du Rhônes and there are CÔTES DU RHÔNES – and this stunning beauty is most certainly the latter! The ONLY reason this BIG, juicy, strawberry-laden goodness in every whiff and sip of a wine doesn’t have a 94-96 point score is that this is a unique cuvée made specifically for a long-time importer. We tasted this several months back, and I mean…HOT DANG!

Pretty sure I could drink all night long, especially if you throw in a pizza, grilled anything, pasta, and/or some killer cheese and charcuterie board. Jammy but not overripe, and crazy spicy, with lots of lavender and that lovely, sweet, windblown herb note. A bit of fresh-turned-earth and silky, dark espresso, too. Rich, intense, and CdP-like liqueur character – with this mouthcoating, not heavy, just easy, supremely smooth sensation that will surely impress EVERYONE! (You really have to say it like Gary Oldman in The Professional to get that full effect.) Man, I LOVE IT!! Only SIXTEEN DOLLARS a pop and UNDER $100 for all SIX?! Ludicrous. Insane. Unbeatable! Ok, not much to go 'round…get yours while it lasts!
