Jacopo Biondi Santi Castello di Montepò Morellino di Scansano 2020

Wait…whaaaaaaaa???? The Biondi Santi family’s newest project – Castello di Montepò – is already putting the spotlight on Tuscany’s Maremma region with their 100pt. Cru series. We discovered this KILLER value estate sangiovese soon after – 96 POINTS and a simply UNREAL PRICE!

Not even $25?! That’s INSANE – for anything, literally, ANYTHING that bears the Biondi Santi crest, or a killer-diller 96 POINT score like this, or an estate sangiovese (with a 5% dash of cabernet sauvignon) from this captivating estate (complete with a thousand-year-old castle) – we’re in uncharted territory here, folks. All-time Last Bottle Deal? Could be!!! The legendary Biondi Santi family – the first family of Montalcino, of Brunello, Tuscany, heck, of Italian wine – coming in hot with a simply STELLAR bottling that just…well, it just SLAYS! If you’ve never heard of Morellino di Scansano, you’re not alone – this tiny village of Scansano, in the most remote and least populated part of Tuscany – has barely been a blip on the wine world’s radar for decades. Things are changing quickly, however – and we’re here to get y’all in on the ground floor while the pricing is still EXCEPTIONAL! Drinks like a $75 sangiovese at least. More Chianti Classico-esque than Brunello – there’s this softness, and focused energy, and graceful minerality to be had…likely a result of those same Galestro soils that Chianti holds so dear. The waves of cherries (some say the name Morellino is a reference to the local Morello cherries) – so fresh, and bright, with notes of black tea and pomegranate, then crushed rock, and coffee beans, some toasted almond nuttiness dragging into culinary herbs like rosemary, thyme, and sage…with this gorgeously integrated acidity, and this cedar-y, woodsy note giving further depth and complexity…WOWZA! It ROCKS, for sure – but hey, this is THE Biondi Santi family after all!!!

Jacopo Biondi Santi – a leader in his family’s illustrious winery for decades – bought the Castello di Montepò in the early 80s, meticulously planting over 120 acres, mostly to his family’s completely unique and prized sangiovese BBS11 clone, with some cabernet sauvignon and a small parcel of merlot as well. The estate lies on the edge of the hillside village of Scansano, only about 10 miles from the sea, and separated from Montalcino by a range of mountains and just about 20 miles as the crow flies. Jacopo and his son, Tancredi, make the wines hand-in-hand here, and they speak about the potential of Scansano as though they traveled back in time to Montalcino over 50 years ago. Heard. Tasted. Confirmed. Watch these prices skyrocket around the world over the next decade, and then you can come back and thank us for acting now! 96 POINTS…UNDER $25…what are you waiting for?!

** Now, there is some debate as to whether Morellino is actually a reference to the local Morello cherries, or rather – a local breed of horse. Morellino means “little dark one” and while it certainly holds true of this sangiovese, apparently there is a dark, black horse breed, used frequently in dressage competitions, that also thrives in the area commonly known as Morelli. Ain’t language a hoot?! **
