Domaine Albin Jacumin Châteauneuf-du-Pape Rouge La Begude des Papes 2021
CHATEAUNEUF! Jacumin’s La Begude Des Papes is a longstanding Last Bottle favorite, with this 2021 vintage nabbing 91-93 POINTS and singled out by Jeb Dunnuck as “borderline outstanding”!!! At our utterly heart-stopping price of 50% OFF – you can go ahead and cross out that borderline nonsense. This is straight-up OUTSTANDING!
Oh, BABY!!! I’ve been waiting over a year for this!!! After tasting all these components from barrel, deep in Jacumin’s underground cave with Albin and Agnès (and their ghost grey Weimaraner pup) back in February of 2023, I’ve been pacing like a caged tiger waiting for this all to come together. 55-year-old vines, infused with this gorgeous, sweet berry perfume, then violets, lavender, and savory spice…WOW!! Unique, exceptional, so complex – it’s gotta be at least $60, right? No?! $45? Go LOWER. $30 – yes, I’m fo’ real, fo’ sho’...only THIRTY DOLLARS! Insane price and just everything you could want in top-notch CdP – at a decidedly un-CdP-like price!
70% grenache, 15% syrah, 12% mourvedre, and a 3% splash of cinsault – all from some of the most INCREDIBLE vineyard land in Châteauneuf. Picture this – gnarled, haunted-looking old vines shooting up through the cobbled stones of Châteauneuf’s highest sun-baked plateau as a kaleidoscope of warm, refracted light paints the horizon...and all just a stone’s throw from Chateau Rayas, and Chateau Vaudieu, not to mention the 12th-century ruin of Pope Clement's palace in the backdrop – just...freakin’...MAGIC! At THIRTY DOLLARS OFF an already crazy-low retail price – you NEED some of this! The quality and purity are EXCEPTIONAL, those heady and forward notes of kirsch and raspberries, then plums, blackberry pie, and a chef’s kiss of French oak, perfectly balanced and the glorious perfume riding overall! So GOOD. Not jammy or overripe, just...so...scintillating and silky throughout a long, pure finish. Take me back! 91-93 strikes me as low, but definitely one of those times where the score is only HALF the story!! One of the greatest values on CdP we’ve ever found! While it lasts!
** Ever since my visit to Albin and Agnès' incredible house, tucked just under the ruins of Pope Clement’s abode, I’ve been trying to match Albin’s impressive selection of digestifs. 50-year-old CdP Marc (think grape must whiskey)?! Not sure where I can find that! Chartreuse 9e Centenaire?! Still looking. I’m light years away, sadly, but I’ll catch up one day… **
