Crane Family Vineyards Red Wine Alison's Cuvee Napa Valley 2018
UNDER $20 Napa Cab blend! From one of California’s most experienced winemakers, who trained alongside André Tchelistcheff!
Ummmm…Wine Wednesday super-deal, anyone?! For way, WAY under $20 we’re talking about a single vineyard wine, mostly Cabernet Sauvignon, from a plot in the foothills below Mt. Veeder, crafted by Alison Green Doran – a 50 year veteran and icon of California’s wine industry, who has crafted wines for Simi, Firestone, Hill Family, and more – even working alongside and hand-in-hand with arguably the greatest winemaker in history…ANDRÉ TCHELISTCHEFF!!! She gets free rein to forge her own special blend here, and this 71% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Merlot, 3% Malbec, and 3% Petit Verdot mix is simply LIGHTS OUT!
And the price?! Be still, my heart! Crane Family is a small, family-run project that makes a tiny amount of wine under their label (but has sold fruit to some legendary Napa wineries over the years – Cakebread, anyone?). Anywho, if you’ve never heard of them, that’s kind of the point – they’ve essentially ONLY ever sold their wines direct to their mailing list (with the occasional spot on the shelf at a local Napa Valley wineshop). We were gifted a bottle, popped it one slow Thursday afternoon a few weeks back, and…WOWZA!!
Sure, the pedigree of 2018’s stunning vintage is on full display (many say the best all-time Napa vintage – including the folks at Wine Spectator with their 99-point rating), but there’s so much more going on here! It’s decidedly old-school, as you might expect from someone who trained under the man almost single-handedly responsible for the CLASSIC Napa style that first put California on the global wine map. STUNNING balance! Age-worthy, and impressively complex! There are blueberries and blackberries, with plenty of structure in the form of graphite and crushed gravel tannins, but also this delicate and savory note – of fresh, wild mushrooms, and air-dried meats, with roasted herbs galore. A fruity core of bramble berries and black cherries gives this some proper OOMPH – but only 13.5% ABV ensures that this makes an ideal dinner companion. For JUST EIGHTEEN DOLLARS?! Crazy good juice, at an even better price!
Go on and grab a handful or two – you certainly won’t regret it!
