Three crus, two 100% single plot Sangioveses, and one 100% single plot Cabernet Sauvignon – from what I think is the most exciting project in all of Italy! Brand new release of the 2020 vintage, and the world is taking note of this simply EPIC Maremma estate. MACEONE – in all of its 98 POINT glory – is a sloped parcel just north of the castle, with an east/west orientation, on clay marl soils planted entirely to the Biondi-Santi’s EXCLUSIVE BBS11 clone of Sangiovese. This clone, discovered in their famed TENUTA GREPPO vineyard – the most famous vineyard in all of Montalcino, by the way – is the family’s heritage, and basis for all of the Sangiovese planted across the Montepò estate. The wine? JAW-DROPPING! Rich, round, spicy, CRAZY complex, loaded with that undeniable TUSCAN-ness – those explosive red cherry flavors, and crushed raspberries, with the cool, minty, smokiness of balsam wood, and roasted herbs, sweet tobacco notes, and dusty, mineral-y, roasted coffee bean SCRUMPTIOUSNESS! ** A glorious 11th-century castle, set high on a hill, overlooking a jaw-dropping 600-hectare estate, a little over 10 miles from the Mediterranean Sea, and just about 20 miles south of the family’s original home of Montalcino. Jacopo Biondi Santi – at the helm of his family’s illustrious winery for decades – bought the Castello di Montepò in the early 80s, meticulously planting over 120 acres, mostly to his family’s completely unique and prized Sangiovese BBS11 clone, with cabernet sauvignon and a small parcel of merlot, as well.
