The Priorat is gone with the wind on this gorgeous Sunday afternoon but, hold UP! If y’all know me at all…you KNOW I love me some beautifully aged RIOJA! And Rioja Reservas?! Even better. For me – Reserva is that perfect, Goldiloxian amount of time on wood – enough to really develop more of that complexity and secondary character than a Crianza, while still keeping that fresh fruit intensity and brightness that is often diminished in a Gran Reserva. This…THIS stunning 2017 is my jammy-jam and utterly can’t-miss Rioja of 2025 – especially when we can share this with the good people of the Last Bottle Universe for UNDER $20!!!

Bodegas Martínez Corta is one of the OG Rioja producers – going all the way back to the late 1800s in the revered La Rioja Alta region. Catalina Martínez was a butcher, or “Corta” and quite the celebrity for her skills – a sort of celebrity chef in her day. Her success led her to purchase a family vineyard, and before she knew it – her wines had become as highly demanded as her cuts of beef, pork, and lamb. With each generation, the winery grew and flourished, and now, 4 generations later we get something as TASTY as this!!!
The structure! The balance! And the FLAVORS!!! Simply classic, dare-I-say BENCHMARK Rioja at a price that is flat-out unbelievable! The heady plums, and muddled cherries, the worn saddle leather, and punchy spice notes of mace, and clove, with a kiss of anise, and a warm hug of Turkish figs, dusted with shavings of bittersweet chocolate, while the smoke of a green cedar fire lingers not far away! It’s CRAZY long and delightfully complicated. I said 94 POINTS, right? For UNDER $20? 8 years young and ready for the BIG STAGE!
